I'm often asked how J & M got started and that story goes way back! It all began when I was about eight years old and asked my parents if I could paint my bedroom. After that, I changed the color in my room every few months.
Around that same time, I developed a strong interest in wallpapering as well. Back in the 1970s, wallpaper was not the same quality as it is today. It was much thinner and typically needed to be replaced every few years. Inevitably, whenever our handyman was scheduled to install new wallpaper, I would somehow come down with a mysterious "illness" that kept me home from school. I’d spend the day following him around the house, asking question after question about his process and techniques.
The “bug” for transforming rooms through color had bitten me and it never let go. I quickly became the go-to friend whenever someone needed help updating their walls.
Over the years, I held many different jobs, from working in the hotel industry to buying and selling antique toys. But in 1989, I made the bold decision to leave a well-paying job and start my own painting and wallpapering business and that’s how J & M was born. My entire family thought I had lost my mind, especially since I had a family to support! I started by working out of the trunk of my car, and yes, the early days were tough. But my drive and ambition kept the business going.
Looking back, maybe I was crazy to take that leap but I’m so glad I did. Watching J & M grow into what it is today has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I still have many hopes and dreams for the future of J & M, and I remain committed to achieving them with the same determination that brought me this far.
